Art of the Austronesians

Mabuhay. Aloha. Welcome to my Austronesian heritage event site honoring Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Join us on a visual journey through an exotic medley of countries and cultures encompassing parts of Southeast Asia, the South Pacific, Madagascar, and Easter Island. it is important to note that Austronesia encompasses nations and territories predominantly populated by Austronesian-speaking people (over 500 million). It is NOT a race or ethnicity, but rather a collective group of people who share a common language family. Map of Austronesia The early Austronesian peoples considered the sea as the basic feature of their life. Following their diaspora to Southeast Asia and Oceania, they migrated by boat to other islands.

What makes the Austronesians special people are their very colorful and uniquely patterned costumes, polytheistic beliefs in ancestral spirits, range of practices such as head-hunting, elaborate tattooing, seafaring skills on uniquely designed organic boats, and of course the construction of impressive monuments like the familiar monoliths of Easter Island. Mummification is only found among the highland Austronesian Filipinos, and in some Indonesian groups in Celebes and Borneo.
